چکیده

Background: A gynogenetic species is a hybrid species in which females must mate with males of their parental species to initiate egg development, but inheritance is strictly maternal. Question: Is the mating preference of an all-female, gynogenetic fish and its parental species repeatable? Organisms: The Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa, is a livebearing gynogenetic fish of hybrid origin. Its parental species are P. latipinna (paternal) and P. mexicana (maternal). Methods: We examined and compared the repeatability in preferences of P. formosa and female P. latipinna for larger vs. smaller P. latipinna males. We also examined the repeatability of female P. mexicana preference for large male P. mexicana. Repeatability relates variation within individuals to the variation between individuals. We related measures of consistency to individual preferences to examine whether female preferences were unanimous. Conclusions: Females of all three species showed population-level mean preferences for larger males. Repeatability of the preference was low for Amazon mollies even though they are a clonal species. The maternal parental species, P. mexicana, also showed low repeatability but females of P. latipinna showed high repeatability in preference for large males, but their preferences were not unanimous.

Male permissiveness in a unisexual–bisexual mating complex promotes maintenance of a vertebrate unisexual sperm-dependent species

Unisexual–bisexual mating complexes are found when an all female sperm-dependent (gynogenetic or hybridogenetic) species relies on heterospecific males for reproduction. Mistakes in species recognition or discrimination on the part of the males are fundamental for the persistence of unisexual–bisexual mating systems, but should be selected against because mating with heterospecific females does...

Pheromone independent unisexual development in Cryptococcus neoformans

The fungus Cryptococcus neoformans can undergo a-α bisexual and unisexual reproduction. Completion of both sexual reproduction modes requires similar cellular differentiation processes and meiosis. Although bisexual reproduction generates equal number of a and α progeny and is far more efficient than unisexual reproduction under mating-inducing laboratory conditions, the α mating type dominates...

Behavioural and life-history regulation in a unisexual/ bisexual mating system: does male mate choice affect female reproductive life histories?

In theory, unisexual taxa have an advantage over ecologically similar bisexual species because unisexuals produce twice as many daughters and, thus, should quickly outcompete coexisting bisexuals in any given population. For sperm-dependent unisexual (gynogenetic) species, stable coexistence with their bisexual sperm donors can be postulated if male mate choice puts unisexual females at a disad...

A potential role of male and female androgen in species recognition in a unisexual-bisexual mating complex.

Hormones play a critical role in the regulation of vertebrate mating behavior, including receptivity, and several components of mate choice. However, less is known about the role of these chemical messengers in mediating behavior associated with premating reproductive isolation. The bisexual-unisexual mating complex of sailfin mollies, Poecilia latipinna, and Amazon mollies, Poecilia formosa (s...

PRM1 and KAR5 function in cell-cell fusion and karyogamy to drive distinct bisexual and unisexual cycles in the Cryptococcus pathogenic species complex

Sexual reproduction is critical for successful evolution of eukaryotic organisms in adaptation to changing environments. In the opportunistic human fungal pathogens, the Cryptococcus pathogenic species complex, C. neoformans primarily undergoes bisexual reproduction, while C. deneoformans undergoes both unisexual and bisexual reproduction. During both unisexual and bisexual cycles, a common set...
